The Benefits of Swedish Massage

Swedish Massage, an ancient therapeutic treatment, has provided health benefits to recipients for many years, offering a scientific system of massage movements which now form the basis of many modern massage techniques.

Swedish Massage is the most common form of massage treatment to date, and is known as the best type of bodywork performed.

A traditional Swedish Massage system includes long smooth strokes, kneading, friction and tapping – a technique promoting the relaxation of tired and aching muscles, whilst encouraging blood flow and skin tone enhancement.

Swedish Massage Techniques

Massage techniques of any form are an excellent mental and emotional stress reliever, leaving clients feeling rejuvenated and refreshed. The main technique of any Swedish Massage is to relax the entire body, and this particular therapy was specifically designed for physical injuries, including tendon and ligament problems and muscle tension. Swedish Massage can be used to relax the muscles after physical exertion, or to warm and loosen them in preparation for rigorous exercise.

This is achieved by rubbing the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of blood flow towards the heart, and is exceptionally beneficial for increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, decreasing muscle toxins, improving circulation and flexibility whilst easing tension.

Additional Swedish Massage techniques include circular pressure applied by the hands and the palms, firm-kneading, percussion-like tapping, bending and stretching. The area massaged first is usually the back, as working muscles along the length of the spine help to soothe the central nervous system, relaxing the client in preparation for the duration of the treatment session.

The Benefits of Swedish Massage

A study conducted by the National Centre for Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that those who received a 45-minute Swedish Massage experienced significant decreases in levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Recipients also had proven increases in the number of lymphocytes; white blood cells that are part of the immune system and that boost the immune cells that help to fight illness.

Swedish Massage 2

Swedish Massage has been found to provide clients with many effective benefits, for both body and mind. These include:

Reduction in muscle spasm, tension and pain

Relaxation (and in return, a reduction in anxiety)Release of endorphins

Improved lymphatic drainage

Improved blood circulation

Improved mobility

Reduction of swelling caused by an accumulation of fluid in the tissues

Inducing a feeling of well-being

Balancing the overall flow of natural life energy through the body

As with any complementary therapies, an initial consultation is carried out before the first treatment. Before and during a Swedish Massage session, communication is key in order to assure the treatment is tailored to your specific needs.

The Power of Antioxidants

In one of our recent blogs we briefly touched upon the subject of antioxidants; these powerful natural substances are revered for their skin protecting qualities and can have a number of benefits for the health of your skin.

Here we take a closer look at the amazing power of antioxidants and how they could benefit you.

What Are Antioxidants?

The term antioxidant refers to particular types of nutrients and enzymes that can help to protect and repair damage to your skin.

Common antioxidants include vitamins A, C and E, and these are found naturally in foods such as fruits, vegetables and grains.

Antioxidants are also an increasingly popular ingredient in skin care products, and incorporating the right antioxidants into your skin care regime is a great way to boost the natural beauty of your skin.

How do Antioxidants Benefit Skin?

You may have noticed that when you cut into an apple it quickly turns brown. This is due to a natural process known as oxidation, which affects all cells, including the ones in your body.

Oxidation is a necessary process required to help the cells in our bodies build proteins and produce energy. However, there are downsides to oxidation too.

Oxidation can lead to the production of harmful molecules known as free radicals. These free radicals can causes damage to the cells in your body, including your skin cells.

Antioxidants protect your skin by limiting the damaging effects of free radicals. They act to block the effects of free radicals, thereby protecting your skin from their harmful effects.

In addition to protecting your skin from the harmful effects of free radicals, antioxidants can also help protect your skin from sun damage too.

Research has demonstrated that vitamins A and C can help protect your skin against sun damage and even skin cancer. These handy substances act to speed up your skin’s natural repair processes by promoting cell and tissue growth, and also directly inhibiting further damage.

Antioxidants can also help to reduce the signs of skin aging too. Collagen is an essential protein that provides vital support for your skin and helps ensure your skin remains looking smooth and firm. The breakdown of the collagen in our skin is one of the main causes of a number of the visible signs of skin ageing.

Antioxidants such as vitamin E have been found to boost collagen production, thereby helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Here at Derma Medica we are experts when it comes to skin care. We are able to offer a range of effective, cutting edge skin care products, which utilise ingredients clinically proven to benefit your skin, such as antioxidants.

We are also proud to be able to offer a range of other treatments including laser hair removal in London and deep tissue massage therapy. Benefits of the Candela GentleMAX Laser Hair Removal System

The technologies in laser hair removal continue to advance, and the Candela GentleMAX Laser Hair Removal System – the system of choice at Derma Medica – is superior in the industry.

There are many benefits to having hair removed using a laser removal system over other hair removal methods, such as shaving and waxing, which we have discussed before. However, the Candela GentleMAX offers many additional benefits.

Two Different Colours of Laser Beam

The Candela GentleMAX system offers two different colours of laser beam, making it more flexible than other technologies. We use long-pulsed alexandrite 755nm laser technology for treatments on Caucasians, which targets the brown melanin hair pigment as well as the hair roots and blood supply for superior and long-lasting hair removal. The long-pulsed neodymium YAG 1064nm laser technology allows for outstanding and unprecedented hair removal on darker skin while eliminating any risks or damage in the process. Both of these technologies are considered gold-standard by dermatologists.

Enhanced Comfort

Some patients experience a mild pinching or stinging sensation during treatment, but the cryogen cooling spray technology – unique to the GentleMAX – works to minimise pain caused to clients on most areas of the body, making it an excellent choice for laser hair removal clients.

The treatments provided by the GentleMAX system are among the most time-efficient on the market. This system can treat a woman’s full legs in under 40 minutes and a man’s back in approximately 15 minutes.

Amazing Results

The GentleMAX system gives amazing results, leaving your skin feeling smooth and soft without the need for time-consuming and painful treatments such as shaving, waxing and threading. It is one of the most efficient, fast and safe products on the market while also providing an excellent end result after a full course of treatments, leaving clients wondering why they hadn’t tried it sooner.

If you would like to experience this system and require laser hair removal in Knightsbridge, please contact our friendly and professional staff today on 020 7225 5050.
