Swedish Massage, an ancient therapeutic treatment, has provided health benefits to recipients for many years, offering a scientific system of massage movements which now form the basis of many modern massage techniques.
Swedish Massage is the most common form of massage treatment to date, and is known as the best type of bodywork performed.
A traditional Swedish Massage system includes long smooth strokes, kneading, friction and tapping – a technique promoting the relaxation of tired and aching muscles, whilst encouraging blood flow and skin tone enhancement.
Swedish Massage Techniques
Massage techniques of any form are an excellent mental and emotional stress reliever, leaving clients feeling rejuvenated and refreshed. The main technique of any Swedish Massage is to relax the entire body, and this particular therapy was specifically designed for physical injuries, including tendon and ligament problems and muscle tension. Swedish Massage can be used to relax the muscles after physical exertion, or to warm and loosen them in preparation for rigorous exercise.
This is achieved by rubbing the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of blood flow towards the heart, and is exceptionally beneficial for increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, decreasing muscle toxins, improving circulation and flexibility whilst easing tension.
Additional Swedish Massage techniques include circular pressure applied by the hands and the palms, firm-kneading, percussion-like tapping, bending and stretching. The area massaged first is usually the back, as working muscles along the length of the spine help to soothe the central nervous system, relaxing the client in preparation for the duration of the treatment session.
The Benefits of Swedish Massage
A study conducted by the National Centre for Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that those who received a 45-minute Swedish Massage experienced significant decreases in levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Recipients also had proven increases in the number of lymphocytes; white blood cells that are part of the immune system and that boost the immune cells that help to fight illness.
Swedish Massage has been found to provide clients with many effective benefits, for both body and mind. These include:
Reduction in muscle spasm, tension and pain
Relaxation (and in return, a reduction in anxiety)Release of endorphins
Improved lymphatic drainage
Improved blood circulation
Reduction of swelling caused by an accumulation of fluid in the tissues
Inducing a feeling of well-being
Balancing the overall flow of natural life energy through the body
As with any complementary therapies, an initial consultation is carried out before the first treatment. Before and during a Swedish Massage session, communication is key in order to assure the treatment is tailored to your specific needs.
