Lip fillers can be a big commitment, especially if you’re having them for the first time. But, the more prepared you are about what’s involved – and what you need to bear in mind for pre-and post-care – the better the results will be. In today’s post, we’ll outline some dos and don’ts to think about before and after your treatment, though it’s worth knowing that if you undergo the procedure, we’ll walk you through these in person, too. Pre- and post-care is essential to follow for best results, so why not print out a copy of this blog post for future reference?

Don’ts of Lip fillers

Let’s start with the don’ts – things that you need to do your best to avoid. Some of these can prevent side effects like bruising and tenderness, while others can stop your skin from becoming infected. The good news is, they’re all temporary – and if you have any questions, just ask.

– Don’t take blood thinners like aspirin, or drink alcohol, in the 24 hours before and after your treatment. This can make bruising worse.

– Don’t carry out treatments on the area (like waxing, bleaching or tweezing) or use hair removal cream in the few days on either side of your treatment.

– Don’t undergo the procedure if you have an active cold sore, if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you might be allergic to the injectable. We’ll cover this in more detail during your consultation.

– Don’t wear make-up immediately before or after treatment.

– In the first few days following your procedure, don’t have heat treatments (spa, sauna etc) and only exercise mildly. Again, this prevents excess bruising.

Do’s of Lip Fillers

Now for the dos – things you can do before and after your lip filler treatment to help prolong results, reduce swelling, pain and discomfort and keep skin happy.

– Do apply an ice pack as and when needed after treatment.

– To manage discomfort with over-the-counter pain relief, as directed by a professional. Drugs like aspirin, and other blood thinners, should be avoided – if in doubt, talk to us.

– Do contact us right away if you’re unsure about anything, or have concerns like fever, discolouration or skin that’s hot to the touch after your lip fillers.

– Do gently massage any bumps that might appear.

– Do wear sun protection to help the skin heal.

– Do drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
